Our Lord and our God

Our creator is the Lord of all beings because He created everything and He controls everything. He controls the sun, the moon, the day, the night as well as life and death. He is the master who governs everything. He has full authority and power over all beings. Accordingly, no one is worthy of being worshipped except Him. He is the deity to whom all creatures must submit and obey.

WHAT IS THE NAME OF OUR GOD?

In Judaism , the name of God is a word of four letters, YHVH, which is assumed to be pronounced "Yahweh". In Judaism, pronouncing YHVH incorrectly is considered sinful. Jews use the word "Adonai" instead in their prayers, which means God.

Many Jews also write "G-d" instead of "God". They do it to remind themselves of the holiness attached to God's name. English translations of the Bible generally render YHVH as "Lord".

In Christianity , the name of God is not human defined, but has divine origin and is based on divine revelation. Respect for the name of God is one of the Ten Commandments, which Christian teachings view not simply as an avoidance of the improper use of the name of God, but as a directive to exalt Him through both pious deeds and praise (... walk in the name of the our God, Micah 4:5).

The simplest form by which God is referred to in the Old Testament is "El", likely derived from His being first and foremost. The word Elohim (singular Eloah) is likely derived from the same root and points to God as being strong and mighty.

In Islam , the name of God is clearly defined and disclosed. His name is Allah, and it is pronounced with a long vowel “a”, Allaah. Here are some verses from the Quran that describe God.

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. Say, He is Allah who is One and Only. Allah is the Self-Sufficient Master, whom all creatures need. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent. Quran, 112:1-4

01

Allah, there is no deity except Him, the Ever- Living, the Sustainer of all existence.

Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.

Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what lies before [His creatures] and what lies behind them.

They encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills.

His Throne (seat of divinity) extends over the heavens and the earth. Preserving and guarding them does not fatigue Him.

He is the Most High, the Most Great. Quran, 2:255

02

Praise be to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth, and made the darkness and the light. Yet those who disbelieve in Him, hold others as equal with their Lord.

It is He who created you from clay then He decreed a term for the life of each human being on earth.

And He decreed a specified time known to Him [for your resurrection on the Day of Judgment]. Yet you have doubt about that.

And He is the God in the heavens and in the earth. He knows your secrets and what you make public, and He knows that which you earn. Quran, 6:1-3

With Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows all that is in the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it.

Nor is there a single grain hidden within the veils of darkness inside the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record. Quran, 6:59

03

It is Allah who causes the grains and seeds to split and sprout. He brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living. That is Allah; so how do you turn away from Him?

He causes the dawn to break and He makes the night a time of rest for you. He moves the sun and the moon so you can recognize and calculate the time and days. This is the design of the Mighty, the All-Knowing.

And it is He who made the stars an indication of the direction that you may be guided by them when travelling through the darkness over the land and sea. We have detailed our signs for the people who have knowledge. Quran, 6:95-97

04

And it is He who produced you from a single soul and [gave you] a place of dwelling on the earth and a repository for you when you die. We have detailed our signs for the people who have understanding.

And it is He who sends down rain from the sky. We bring forth thereby plants of every kind. We produce green plants that have multiple grains.

From the palm trees, we bring forth clustered fruits that are hanging low. We created gardens of grapevines, olives, pomegranates and many fruits that are similar in their foliage and color, yet they are unlike in their fruitage and taste.

Look at these plants when they start giving fruits and when they ripen. Indeed, in them there are signs for the people who believe in God. Quran, 6:98-99

05

But some people have attributed partners to God such as the Jinn, although He created them. Others have fabricated for Him sons and daughters. Exalted is He and high above what they describe.

He is the Originator of the heavens and the earth. How could He have a son when He does not have a companion and He created all things? He is, Knowing of all things.

That is Allah , your Lord; there is no deity except Him, the Creator of all things, so worship Him. He is the Disposer of all things.

No eye can reach Him, yet He attains all that eyes can see. He is above all comprehension. He is the Subtle, the All-Aware. Quran, 6:95-103

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LORD AND GOD?

In Islam, there is a clear distinction between "Lordship" and "Godhead". The former is derived from the word "Lord", which means the master, ruler, owner and controller. The latter is derived from the word "God", which means the deity that is worshiped alone. Muslims believe that no one has divinity except Allah.

Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. Quran, 1:2
Say I seek refuge in the Lord of people, the King of people, the God of people. Quran, 114:1-3

God's names and attributes: The old and new testaments mention many attributes of God. God is described as Jehovah Shalom (i.e. the Lord of Peace).

He is El Shaddai (i.e. The Mighty), Adonai (i.e. the Lord and Master), Qadosh (i.e. the Holy), Echad (i.e. the One).

Some of these names and attributes are very similar to the ones mentioned in the Quran, such as "As-Salam" which means the Peace, "Al-Ahad" which means the One and"Al-Quddouss" which means the Holy.
